USPHL Premier: A Look At The South Division

Back to back wins at Potomac kept the Carolina Junior Hurricanes perfect in USPHL Elite South Division play this past weekend.

Following is a rundown on all 10 South Region games from a weekend that actually started Thursday evening.

 

Carolina Hurricanes 6 @ Potomac Patriots 5

The opener at Prince William Ice Center saw the teams combining on 73 shots and 11 goals.

Brian Kerrigan (‘00/Warrenton, Va.) enjoyed a big game for the home team with two goals and two assists.

The following day, the teams played a more defensive style of game, Zac Horn (‘99/Morrisville, N.C.) scoring the second of three unanswered first period goals for the Canes which ended up as the game winner.

Daniel Vecka (‘99/Karlov, Vary, Slovakia) stopped 37 shots to lead his team to a win despite being outshot by close to double.

Upcoming: The Hurricanes have won four straight and will enjoy a weekend off before returning to play a huge home set against the Rush Oct. 26-27. The Patriots will travel to Chesapeake for the next two weekends for four straight against the Whalers.

 

Charleston Colonials @ Charlotte Rush

Four unanswered first period goals send the Rush on its way to a lopsided shutout win at Xtreme Ice near Charlotte Saturday and the home side wrapped up the sweep Sunday with a 7-1 win at the same rink.

Jac Lynn (‘01/Charlotte, N.C.) picked up the shutout win in goal for the Rush and Guillaume Lancellette (‘00/Montreal, Que.) scored twice.

The following day Ivan Korcak (’01/Zlina, Slovakia) scored three goals for the Rush and Kristupas Blazys (‘02/Rokiskas, Lithuania) fired a pair.

Ahead: The Colonials will return home to play host to the Tampa Bay Juniors on both Saturday and Sunday while the Rush hits the road for a couple games in Richmond against the Generals. The Premier matchup is this week’s Premier Free Game Of The Week on USPHL.HockeyTV.com.

The Generals scored the first four of the opener and never looked back in a game that saw six different goal scorers.

The following day, Neal Cooper (‘01/Rowlett Texas scored twice to lead the Gens, Lane Snell (‘02/Topeka, Kan.) and Luke Dosen (‘00/Denver, Colo.) both added a goal and assist.

Ahead: The Generals will play host to the Charlotte Rush for two games this weekend while the Whalers play host to the Potomac Patriots for two at Chilled Ponds Sentara Healthcare Rink.

 

Florida Division

Florida Eels 4 @ Florida Jr. Blades 3

Florida Jr. Blades 2 @ Florida Eels 8

The Eels padded their division lead, extending it to six points after its most recent weekend, a home-and-home series with their chief rivals the Florida Jr. Blades.

The Blades scored three straight to take a 3-2 lead well into the third period, before Yakov Yakzhin (‘03/Moskva, Russia) tied it. Demeed Podrezov (‘00/Muskegon, Mich.) scored his second OT game-winner of the season (and third GWG overall).

Adam Gaudet (‘01/St-Gaudet, Que.) and Maksim Tereshchenko (‘01/Russia) each scored two goals and one assist on Saturday in Fort Myers.

 

Tampa Bay Juniors 2 @ Atlanta MadHatters 5

In the opener to this series, the Juniors hit the scoreboard first but the MadHatters scored the next four to grab control.

Ryan Bahula (‘03/St. Petersburg, Fla.) scored both Tampa goals.

The following day it saw teams even three times before the Juniors took the lead for good with two unanswered goals in the second half of the middle period.

Upcoming: The MadHatters will begin a stretch of four straight on the road with to at Fort Myers against the Florida Eels this weekend and the Jr. Blades will get a weekend off before returning to play two against Atlanta the following weekend.
